The Suma Platform

Portland, OR
/
USA
Solution Area:
Evidence, Design & Technology

The suma platform applies community organizing principles to data, transforming personal data from a dispersed resource outsiders extract to an organized resource the community controls.

Suma launches the suma platform, a technology-based experiment that enhances privacy by changing the data relationship between frontline communities and vendors of essential goods and services and that increases community buying power via ledger-based integration of user funds, public and private subsidy and vendor discounts. An open-source, web-based application designed to function with one bar of connectivity, the platform serves users from populations affected by data-driven discrimination: low-income people, people of color, other frontline communities.
